Hodges University’s Online English Grammar Program is a sequential system for understanding English grammar patterns from basic to advanced skill levels. Our online program has been designed specifically for adult non-English speakers to understand grammar and speak English confidently.

This course is for individuals who need the flexibility of learning online, have access to a smartphone or mobile device, may be shy or embarrassed to communicate in a classroom or interpersonal environment, and/or want an ESL course designed to deliver quality online English lessons at an affordable price.

English Grammar Online: Beginning (Levels 1-3)

In the Beginning (Levels 1-3) English Grammar Online course, start your journey by understanding how to identify and use nouns, pronouns, articles, adjectives, possessives, both present tenses and the past tense of Be. Learn how to capitalize, make questions, and contract to enhance comprehension and spoken fluency.

• English Grammar Online Level 1: By the end of Level 1, students will be able to identify and understand (pro)nouns, articles, simple present (ir)regular verbs, prepositional phrases, and capitalization. Practical Application videos include consonants, vowels, and silent -e.
• English Grammar Online Level 2: By the end of Level 2, students will be able to identify and understand (non)count nouns, quantifying expressions, present tenses, object pronouns, and possessive adjectives. Practical Application videos include spelling pronunciation strategies.
• English Grammar Online Level 3: By the end of Level 3, students will be able to identify and understand stative verbs, question words and formations, modal verbs, object infinitives, and Be in simple past. Practical Application videos include imperative, contractions and pronunciation of modals, question words and Be in past time. 

Intermediate (Levels 4-6): English Grammar Online

The Intermediate (Levels 4-6) of English Grammar Online will teach you how to identify and use simple and progressive tenses in present, past, and future time, make comparisons and requests, and seek and give advice and permission. Learn how to combine sentences and use phrasal verbs and linked forms to enhance comprehension and spoken fluency.

• English Grammar Online Level 4: By the end of Level 4, students will be able to identify and understand simple past, comparative and superlative, simple future verb tenses, and modals of request and variations of their forms. Practical Application videos include simple past spelling, pronunciation of simple past, will, and be going to, and intensifiers.
• English Grammar Online Level 5: By the end of Level 5, students will be able to identify and understand past continuous vs. simple past time, subordinate and coordinate conjunctions, modal verbs of advice and preference, gerund objects. Practical Application videos include past time analysis, sequencing with subordinate conjunctions, giving advice and warnings, and resources for practice.
• English Grammar Online Level 6: By the end of Level 6, students will be able to identify and understand gerunds and infinitives in subject and object positions, present perfect vs. simple past and present perfect continuous, and phrasal verbs. Practical Application videos include how gerunds, infinitives, present perfect tenses, and phrasal verbs are used in practical situations and interactions. 

Advanced (Levels 7-9): English Grammar Online

The Advanced (Levels 7-9) of English Grammar Online will teach you how to identify and use all simple, perfect, and progressive tenses, adjective and noun clauses, active and passive voice, and hypothetical conditions. Learn how to express necessity, possibility, probability, and hopes and wishes in all tenses and in a variety of scenarios. Additionally, learn about the rhythm and intonation of English speech to enhance comprehension and spoken fluency. You are purchasing a 6-month subscription to the course content.

•  English Grammar Online Level 7: By the end of Level 7, students will be able to identify and understand all simple, perfect, and progressive tenses and noun clauses with all connecting words in varying positions. Practical Application videos include emphatic do and negative/tag questions, noun clauses and gerunds/infinitives as noun options, the importance of indirect questions in speech, and the complex but rarely used past and future perfect tenses.
• English Grammar Online Level 8: By the end of Level 7, students will be able to identify and understand modal verb forms in all tenses, form and function of adjective clauses, and the active vs. passive voice. Practical Application videos include expansion of modals of necessity and possibility, the two forms of inversion, identifying adjective clauses, and analysis of passive voice.
• English Grammar Online Level 9: By the end of Level 9, students will be able to identify and understand passive voice with modals, stative passive, active vs. passive causative forms, and forms and types of conditionals and wishes. Practical Application videos include analysis of rhythm and intonation of English speech, present vs. past participle adjectives, adjective clauses reduced to participle phrases, and usage and interpretation of hopes and wishes in practical interactions and situations.
